Let’s roll

I already mentioned the German spiessigkeit and our love for small round loafs of bread for breakfast. But even if you don’t have to translate between two languages to explain the difference between an American sandwich and a German belegtes Brötchen you will soon reach your own (linguistic) limits. Rolls are very common in Germany, but the German language has many local terms for rolls, such as Brötchen (non-dialectal high German), Rundstück (a term used in Hamburg) and Schrippe (as the Berliners say). In Bavaria you will have a Semmel for breakfast and in Franconia they love to eat Weckchen!
